Binds Ammonia
Nobody needs to tell a poultry farmer about how bad a thing ammonia is. It is bad for the birds, bad for the farmer, corrosive to equipment and just bad for the environment in general. The question has always been what can be done about it.
The industry accepted answer for many years had been to change the acidity of the litter to limit ammonia. Ammonia is a volatile compound. At a pH above 7.2 the compound acts as ammonia gas which causes problems. Below 7.2 it is converted into ammonium. This continual ebb and flow is typically manipulated for day one placement of the birds. Afterwards ammonia levels sky rocket and costly ventilation is implemented to draft the air.
Products containing Sodium Bisulfate (PLT) or Alum are available temporarily lower the pH before they are used up and their effectiveness exhausted. The natural state of a poultry litter bed has a typical ph of 8.5 - 9, and the pH in your house will inevitably creep back toward this. No matter how hard you try to lower the ph value of your poultry house with harsh corrosive chemicals, you are fighting an uphill battle you just can not win. Litter Life does not simply lower the PH value of the litter beds like these acid products.
Litter Life attacks the ammonia in three ways to permanently remove it from the litter beds:
Biological Conversion
Litter Life contains a microbial blend of biology that specifically target ammonia and convert that ammonia to fertilizer (Ammonium Nitrate), completely eliminating the possibility of it being emitted back into the house as ammonia.
Lignin / Carbon
Ammonia out-gassing can be exasperated by a lack of carbon in the litter bed. When the amount of carbon is less than that required for converting available nitrogen into protein, organisms make full use of the available carbon and get rid of the excess nitrogen as ammonia. Litter Life adds a considerable amount of carbon in the form of lignin, a critical factor in minimizing ammonia
Humic Acid Ammonia Chelation
Litter Life is very high in Humic and Fulvic acids. Scientific studies have shown that humic substances in general have great ability in controlling NH3 (Ammonia) volatilization while retaining NH4+ (Ammonium) through a process called chelation.
If you are looking for a long term ammonia control program that will be both effective and won't break the bank, then Litter Life from Southland Organics is the best choice available on the market.
