Long Term Ammonia Prevention
A new flock is coming in soon and the foul smell of ammonia is wafting up from your built up litter. You know how bad that ammonia would be for your new birds, and you want to do the best thing possible, and have the best, healthiest flock ever.
For years now, the thing to do about this has been to spread powerful acid products into your poultry house. If you make the pH level of the litter low enough, if you make it more acidic, then the Ammonium can’t turn into Ammonia and gas off.
The problem with this approach is that all that Ammonium is still there. The acid doesn’t do away with it. It just traps the ammonium and kicks the problem down the road a few weeks. Eventually the poultry manure itself will raise the pH, and the Ammonia will come back. Older birds can tolerate the Ammonia better, or so we are told.
The truth is that high levels of ammonia later in the flock won’t sicken or kill older birds, but it doesn’t help them to grow to their maximum potential, and it doesn’t do you any good breathing that junk either.
It is often stated that a 10 point rise in ammonia ppm over 25 causes a full basis point increase in feed conversion and a decrease in bird weight. Let’s assume you are expecting a 5 lb. bird with a 1.95 conversion with ammonia at 25 ppm. If your ammonia elevated to 35 ppm your stats would likely drop to 4.9 pounds with a 2.05 conversion. What is this doing to your paycheck?
Litter Life works in a totally different way from the acid treatments you are used to. We use beneficial biology (bacteria), in a proprietary base specially designed to give the biology a jump start. Some of the biology is there to break down litter into ammonium faster then it normally would. Another bug is there to bind the ammonium with nitrogen to make Ammonium Nitrate, common plant fertilizer. Once bound up as fertilizer, It can’t change back. Ammonia is out of the equation forever.
Biology needs a little time to grow. You can’t expect Litter Life to be at its maximum effectiveness in the first couple of days of your first application. We aren’t saying it won’t do well, but if you smother your house with acid, you might do better....AT FIRST.
After a few days the bugs really get going, and your Ammonia levels will plummet. After a few weeks, when the acid products all wear off, you will continue to see low ammonia levels from a house treated with Litter Life.
When you go to treat a house a second time that was previously treated with litter life, that is where we excel. Your ammonia levels will be much lower than a house treated with acid, and adding a fresh application of Litter Life will take it down even further. If you continue using Litter Life flock after flock, you will find that Ammonia is nearly a thing of the past.
Litter Life doesn’t treat Ammonia........It prevents it!
